Positive Material Identification – PMI
Positive material identification is a method of non-destructive testing that analyzes the composition of metallic alloys and determines the quantities by percentage of its chemical composition. The purpose of this type of testing identify materials and if any incorrect materials have been used. It determines the material is in compliance and meets the specifications and insure the proper welding.
Advantages
Quick and accurate results.
Light and portable
Leaves no trace of testing
Limitations
Depth of penetration is less than one thousandth of an inch. Surface must be clean and accessible
Material temperature must be below 90 Celsius.
Carbon, sulfur and phosphorous cannot be identified with x-ray Florence XRF
